Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks are a huge draw for crowds in the summer, but did you realize that they are open year round? Fall and winter visits not only give you a chance to see the majesty of the parks with fewer crowds but also open them up for all new adventures.
What could be more magical than seeing some of the world’s tallest trees covered in snow? The two parks combine to have over 800 miles of trails to explore on skis with perfect options for beginners and experts alike. If you’re starting in King’s Canyon, the Grant Grove Market will have everything you need to enjoy the snow including cross-country ski rentals and all of the other winter gear necessary to get you warmed up.
Have your own snowshoes? Perfect! Bring them along and enjoy snowshoeing in either of the parks. Don’t have your own snowshoes? No problem! There are ranger-guided snowshoe walks available in both Sequoia National Park & Kings Canyon. These weekend walks are typically about a mile long and the snowshoes are provided for free! Note: Advanced reservations are strongly recommended.
Sledding and More
Are you traveling with the whole family? There is plenty of kid-friendly fun to be had in the snow. In Sequoia visit Wolverton Meadow for a snowy play area and sledding fun. In King’s Canyon, Big Stump is the perfect place for sledding and much more. Either place is perfect for the whole family to explore, learn a new skill (see above), or just find a spot to build the perfect snowman.
